Addiction Recovery and Health Coaching

Addiction can be a scary time for many individuals and loved ones. Thankfully, there can be many different resources that can be provided along the way. This journey is one that may require the entire family to get involved with seeking healthy habits! Recovery is possible and giving hope can be insurmountable.

Knowing what treatment options are available as you walk through this journey is important. Some individuals may choose to go into detox, outpatient, inpatient, residential, or transitional housing or use telemedicine along their path. Family members and loved ones may also want to get involved and attend individual therapy, support groups, or family therapy. Positive support throughout this journey is essential and can look different for everyone. Your support group may look like a therapist, your PCP, family members, friends, or a health coach. It is important to remember that this is not a complete list of available treatment options or resources. Everyone’s journey will look different as this is not a one-size-fits-all journey.

One well-known resource is SAMHSA or Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. SAMHSA can provide a free and confidential location for information and resources nationwide! You can reach SAMHSA at 1-800-662-HELP (4357) or online at www.samhsa.gov. SAMHSA is an excellent resource for individuals and their loved ones in recovery. SAMHSA discusses on their website about co-occurring disorders, which sometimes occur when having substance use and a mental health disorder. It is vital for individuals to address both to achieve success in both areas. Another key resource to remember is the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. You or a loved one can call or text 988 to reach a crisis counselor. This resource is available 24/7 for individuals who may need this resource.

Social determinants of health are another important aspect to discuss in recovery. Social determinants shape the way individuals live. They can majorly impact individuals' personal, work, and community lives. For example, an individual’s finances may play a role in the resources they can obtain. Another example we can look at is determining what kind of resources are available in someone’s neighborhood such as where or not transportation is readily available. That is where findhelp.org can step in and help. Findhelp.org can help individuals find low-cost resources such as food, housing, healthcare, or daycare options. Individuals can go to their webpage and type in their zip code to see a list of options that are available in their surrounding area. Please connect with your dedicated account manager to enable the Findhelp widget for your portal. It's important to note that all Navigate users have access to this invaluable tool at no cost, which plays a crucial role in connecting individuals with the necessary resources available in their local area.

Once an individual has decided and feels they are ready they may start to focus on self-care. The first step is to decide what self-care means to you. Do you have positive or negative connotations surrounding self-care? Self-care can be seen as the practice of doing activities that are promoting your health and wellbeing. Self-care can look different for everyone! This is not a one size fits all approach when we talk about self-care. Some individuals see self-care as taking time to read, journal, walk, exercise, or meditate. Others may find more benefit in self-care activities that have them leaving their homes such as going out to dinner with friends, getting their hair done, or going to get a massage. The variety of self-care activities available empowers you to choose what best suits your needs. Self-care can help us make sure we are filling all areas in our lives such as spiritual, physical, mental, and our emotional health. Health coaches can come alongside someone on this healing journey and help in different areas that they would like to focus on. A health coach can help someone focus on their nutritional habits or their movement goals and how that may be impacting their bodies. Setting goals, gaining information, being accountable, and providing hope are crucial pieces that health coaches can help with.

Navigate coaching can help participants through health and life coaching. Our coaches are nationally certified, reliable sources, and supported by a team of clinicians. Healthy living and having the knowledge behind it is essential for all of us, including individuals in recovery. Life coaching can support individuals who might need support with stress management, time management, self-care, grief, exploring purpose, or other areas that are impacting someone’s everyday life. Health coaches can help through personalized support, education, creating self-efficacy, encouraging lifestyle changes, and improving health and wellbeing outcomes. Our coaches can help individuals grow in their overall wellbeing journey. Another great resource we can provide to participants is the NavigateYOU assessment. This assessment can help you understand yourself better and how you interact at work, home, and other areas of your life through understanding your personality preferences. Coaches can help you work through the 8 pillars of health and create goals to help inspire growth in the different areas. Within the 8 pillars of health, you may want to create goals around finances, purpose, nutrition, or balance, to name a few. Navigate coaches are ready to help along the journey!

Again, recovery can be a challenging and intimidating time for all involved. However, it's important to remember that you are not alone. A wealth of resources is available to support you and your loved ones. Having a strong knowledge base of what resources are available for the individual and their loved ones is an important step! Focusing on self-care for all involved through various routes such as nutrition, exercise, or reaching out to your supports can help along the way.
