Take a pause — to enhance your wellbeing

We recently had the privilege of speaking with Heather Stuyvesant, who serves as the director of development at Mind & Spirit Counseling. Our discussion centered around the myriad of wellbeing benefits that can be derived from integrating yoga into one's lifestyle. Read her blog on yoga, and let's learn to take a pause.

In today's fast-paced world, our culture equates busyness with success. We're constantly bombarded with notifications, deadlines, and the pressure to do more. The hustle culture glorifies being perpetually occupied, leaving little space for rest and reflection. Yet, taking a moment to pause and breathe can be transformative, allowing us to reconnect with ourselves, find inner stability, and navigate life's many challenges with greater clarity and presence.

However, this relentless pace can lead to burnout, stress, and a complete disconnection from ourselves and others.

Whenever we pause, we create space in our lives. Pausing can take many forms, but it is not a luxury but a necessity.

Taking time to slow down and breathe allows us to recharge and gain perspective. In these moments of stillness, we can reconnect with our inner selves, fostering creativity and mindfulness. Pausing is a vital part of our wellbeing, helping us to be present, appreciate the beauty in the ordinary, and nurture our mental and emotional health.

Incorporating pauses into our daily routine is crucial for enhancing our quality of life. Whether through meditation, walking in nature, or simply sitting quietly, prioritizing these moments of rest contributes to our overall productivity and happiness. In a world that never stops, it's important to recognize the power and importance of simply pausing. However, finding a moment to pause can feel daunting in our packed schedules and constantly racing minds. Amidst this chaos, yoga emerges as a sanctuary, offering a much-needed pause and creating space in our lives.

As a yoga practitioner, I would like to share some unexpected benefits of yoga, including how it can help you take a pause.

Yoga is more than just physical exercise; it's a holistic practice that unites the body, mind, and spirit. Through mindful movement and breathwork, yoga encourages us to slow down and tune into the ocean of our being. Each pose, or asana, invites us to explore our inner landscape, reconnect with ourselves, and cultivate inner stability so that we can navigate the many challenges that life offers us with greater clarity and presence.

One of the most profound benefits of yoga is its ability to create space—both physically and mentally. Stress, worry, and trauma get stored physically in our bodies. As we stretch and intentionally move our bodies, we release tension and open up areas that feel tight or constricted. This physical space can lead to greater freedom and ease in our daily movements.

Mentally, yoga provides a break from the constant chatter of our minds. When we use our breath and movement as a portal into presence, we can allow in a sense of mental stillness that can be deeply restorative. When we allow ourselves to pause, we give ourselves to take a step back from the many stories we tell ourselves and gain a fresh perspective, often leading to greater clarity and insight.

Moreover, the practice of yoga teaches us the importance of self-compassion and mindfulness. It encourages us to listen to our bodies and respect our limits, fostering a sense of self-care that can permeate all aspects of our lives. By making space for ourselves on the mat, we learn to make space for ourselves in the world, prioritizing our well-being amidst the demands of everyday life.

Incorporating yoga into our routine doesn't require a significant time commitment. Even a few minutes of mindful stretching and deep belly breathing can create a meaningful pause, helping us reset and recharge. Whether it's a full hour-long session or just a brief moment of stillness, yoga can be a powerful tool for cultivating presence and peace.

When off the mat, we can bring yoga into our daily lives by practicing the art of pausing. Whether taking a deep breath before rushing to send off the next email or walking with intention and presence from our cars to the office, we can get creative in the ways we pause. The technique of pausing leads us to a wonderful paradox: the more we slow down, the more life appears to expand. In other words, the more frequently we learn how to pause and take a breath, the more space we feel and the clearer our mind becomes. Change takes place in the gaps. Gradually, as we learn to enjoy such pauses, our anxiety begins to diminish, our hearts soften, and we remember once again that life can be filled with magic and mystery. As you move through your day, notice the natural pauses in life. See just how many pauses you can harvest throughout the day, and soon, you will notice that a day filled with pauses is a calm and measured day.

In a culture that celebrates busyness, yoga reminds us of the importance of slowing down and creating space for ourselves. It's a practice that nurtures both body and soul, offering a refuge from the hustle and bustle of modern life. So, roll out your mat, take a deep breath, and give yourself the gift of yoga—a beautiful pause in an otherwise hectic world.
