Supporting employee health while keeping healthcare costs in check isn’t easy. A small hospital in Illinois, with over 100 employees and rising claims, faced this challenge head-on. That’s where Navigate came in. By creating a personalized health coaching program, they helped the hospital see meaningful results—a drop in claims costs and fewer high-risk employees in just three years. This case study shares their journey, the strategies that worked, and the steps that made a real difference.

The challenge

A small critical access hospital in Illinois partnered with Navigate to offer health coaching to its employees. The team’s goal was to use health coaching to improve employees’ health and reduce healthcare claims costs.  With over 100 employees and around $15 million in annual revenue, the fully insured hospital ended the year with a 140% increase in claims spend above projections.
According to its wellbeing survey results, an increasing number of the hospital’s employees were high-risk, rising risk, or had uncontrolled chronic conditions.

Before engaging with Navigate, the hospital team was unsure how best to intervene. They provided only biometric screenings to their participants, with no additional support to improve their health if needed. As claims costs continued to rise, hospital leadership started to look for a wellbeing solution that included health coaching to provide the personalized, one-on-one support that participants needed to improve their health.

How Navigate helped

The hospital brought on Navigate to drive return on investment (ROI) in the form of real health improvements and claims cost savings.

Navigate assigned a Strategic Account Manager to work closely with the hospital team. Together, they designed a customized wellbeing program that would deliver engagement and ROI.

The hospital’s assigned Navigate Account Manager recommended a holistic wellbeing program that included personalized health coaching to fit the diverse needs of its population. Navigate recommended the following health coaching programs to address current and long-term health risks:

  • Biometric Screenings and Wellbeing Results Review to empower each participant to understand their biometric results, areas of need, and the next best step to take to improve their health

  • Condition Management Coaching for high-risk members to better their health

  • Lifestyle Coaching for moderate- and low-risk members to reduce long-term risk and prevent disease before it develops

The results

The hospital’s Navigate Account Manager worked closely with the team to continuously analyze outcomes data and adapt the coaching program to participants’ needs. Together, they drove high coaching engagement and completion among participants who needed support the most.
